Day to day operations

Household waste from the local area is collected by Wakefield Metropolitan Borough Council´s refuse vehicles and brought to Welbeck for final disposal. Other household and commercial waste will be brought to Welbeck by independent hauliers.

Weighbridge

All vehicles have to report to the weighbridge where each load is inspected, assisted by cameras, and the documentation, which must accompany all waste, is checked.  A paper and computer record of waste which arrives at the site is kept.   Each load is examined and weighed at the weighbridge to ensure that it conforms to the requirements of the site´s Environmental Permit — if waste does not conform, it will not be accepted.

Tipping face

The tipping face is where the waste is deposited and this face moves as the landfill is developed.  Once waste is deposited at the assigned tipping face, it is compacted straightaway to form a landfill layer.  As soon as possible, following the creation of a new landfill layer, deposited waste is covered up by materials such as soil, preventing nuisance odour or litter.  Screens are also used to prevent litter from blowing away and any materials stopped by the screens are litter-picked and deposited back into the landfill.  The perimeter fences are also regularly inspected, should any litter be blown that far. 

Welbeck also employs a number of measures to deter birds, such as gulls, from using the site as a food source.  One method that has proved successful is using birds of prey, which are flown around the site each day by a specialist bird handler.  Other practices such as kites — loud hailers that emit bird distress calls — and bird scaring rockets have also been used, as birds can be become familiar with the measures that are put in place.
