- Welbeck landfill site is located approximately two kilometres east of Wakefield town centre and employs 12 full-time staff.
- WRG began landfilling at Welbeck in 1998, following the granting of planning permission and a waste management licence in 1997.
- The landfill occupies a relatively small area (some 100 hectares from a total site area of 300 hectares) on the western side of the River Calder.
- It receives approximately 600,000 tonnes of non-hazardous waste each year from households and local businesses in Wakefield and the surrounding area.
- A composting facility processes approximately 10,000 tonnes of green waste each year.
- More than 100,000 trees will be planted at Welbeck as part of the restoration plan.
- In excess of five kilometres of public footpath/bridleways will link the restored Welbeck site to the local area - providing a valuable public amenity.
- Approximately £1.3 million of WREN funding has been donated over the last five years to community projects within a 10 mile radius of the Welbeck landfill site.
- Electricity generation from landfill gas at Welbeck will contribute 8MW of electricity to the national grid each year - enough electricity to support the needs of more than 8,000 homes.
