Corporate Responsibility Report

The successful management of safety, health and the environment is at the heart of good business practice, and WRG is fully committed to reporting on our performance in this area.

As a leading UK waste management company, the nature of our activities means that we can play a very positive part in safeguarding the environment by ensuring the secure, effective and economic management and disposal of society's wastes.

As with all companies and the economic activity they promote, WRG also has the potential for a negative impact on the environment. The Company is aware of this and works hard to ensure that its policies acknowledge the need to reduce such impact to a minimum.

The positive management of SHE is an integral part of WRG's business. The Company has developed a comprehensive environmental management system, which is based on formal Company policies for both health and safety and the environment. Ultimate responsibility for these policies lie with the Group Chief Executive who must ensure that they are given equal priority with other major business objectives.

WRG has received accreditation to the ISO14001 environmental standard at all of its operating sites. This international standard seeks to ensure consistency and high quality in the management of environmental processes, and rigorously examines companies' approach to issues such as the environmental monitoring of sites.

ISO14001 requires a number of key elements to be in place before registration can be achieved, including:
  • an environmental policy
  • compliance with legislation
  • setting objectives and targets
  • formation of an environmental management programme to achieve objectives and targets
  • internal audit process and management review demonstrating continual improvement within an organisation
WRG openly reports on its health and safety, environmental and social performance. This Corporate Responsibility Report takes into account all the Group's activities including waste management and quarrying. We have continued to expand the Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) from our first report in 1999, in line with current best practice for environmental reporting. The Company has attempted to ensure that where practical the report reflects the Government's sustainable development indicators, together with work carried out by the Green Alliance and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).
