Environmental Controls

Modern landfill sites are designed and operated to minimise any potential impact on both the environment and local communities. As a leading UK waste management company, WRG is committed to fulfilling these responsibilities and has a rigorous environmental monitoring programme.

Operations at Welbeck are monitored daily to ensure that possible nuisances such as noise, dust and litter are minimised. The site is regularly inspected by the Environment Agency, including unannounced visits, to ensure that all waste is handled and disposed of safely. Environmental health officers employed by Wakefield Council also regularly review the operation of the site and will investigate any concerns raised by local residents.

Information on how leachate and landfill gas are managed at Welbeck is available in this section.

Compost

We operate compost plants throughout the UK, and compost over 100,000 tonnes every year.

The compost produced finds a variety of end users; restoration of our own landfill sites, some is returned to our local authority partners, and, increasingly it is used for the manufacture of top quality soils and bagged compost for the retail sector.

Methods of composting; Windrow composting, Pod composting, In-vessel systems.
