Eastcroft Energy from Waste Facility

Waste Recycling Group operates the energy from waste facility at Eastcroft, Nottingham.

The energy from waste facility produces heat and power for local users by burning around 150,000 tonnes of waste from Nottingham and the county each year. Waste is brought to the facility after people have sorted out materials for recycling at home and at the Household Waste Recycling Centres.

Energy produced from burning waste helps to reduce the need for non-renewable fossil fuels and produces electricity for the local grid and heat (in the form of steam) for homes in the city centre.

In August 2007, WRG submitted a new planning application for a third line at the Eastcroft Energy from Waste facility that would increase capacity from 150,000 to 250,000 tonnes a year. This planning application was approved by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government in February 2009.

Building on its well-established track record in energy recovery, WRG is now taking an innovative approach to finding additional ways to use its landholding to help generate renewable energy in the UK.

WRG is committed to helping the UK meet its renewable energy targets and reduce its carbon emissions. Recognising that the UK has the best wind resource in Europe - and could meet at least 40 per cent of its electricity requirements through on-and-off-shore wind power generation - WRG has reached the conclusion that developing wind turbines on appropriate and existing landfill sites is the next logical step for the company to take.
