Waste Recycling Group (WRG) and Suffolk County Council have joined forces with BBC Radio Suffolk and Suffolk Police to promote the 2010 “Don’t Be a Tosser” initiative.
This year’s campaign kicked off this week (1 March) and is now in its third year.
It was originally launched to address the littering on the side of the county’s trunk road network and now encompasses fly-tipping, graffiti, anti-social behaviour and littering.
One of the Suffolk contract’s 40-yard waste containers, and a 7.5 tonne waste electrical and electronic equipment collections vehicle now carry the new “Don’t Be a Tosser” logo.
The 18 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) in Suffolk that are operated by Waste Recycling Group have been distributing 20,000 window stickers and posters for the campaign.
In addition, 20,000 themed beer mats have been distributed to pubs and clubs across the county; thousands of people young and old have organised clear ups in their towns and villages, and a brand new anti-litter song and accompanying pop video has been recorded by the County’s school pupils!
The ‘Pick it up’ song is being learnt at schools across Suffolk.
Suffolk Police is a key partner with all of the County’s Safer Neighbourhood teams promoting the message and taking part in local events such as litter picks and estate clean ups.
As part of the campaign:
• Every parish council has been sent posters and encouraged to organise litter picks in their patch. Every school has been contacted and supplied with posters to help keep Suffolk clean. Many have worked with their own ECO teams to spread the word and clear up around their schools;
• The Port of Felixstowe is displaying the Keep Suffolk Clean message on its matrix signs at the entrance and exit to the port;
• Suffolk truck driver Kevin Hessey has taken on the campaign and been featured on the BBC 1 Inside Out programme. He has also written his own article about the campaign in the 25th anniversary edition of Truck and Driver magazine.
• Music festivals across the county are displaying posters and playing the “Don’t be a Tosser” message over the PA.
“The campaign has clearly caught the imagination of people across Suffolk and beyond,” said Suffolk County Council Portfolio Holder for Waste and Recycling, Cllr Lisa Chambers.
“We are hoping to build on previous years’ achievements in making a real difference in our county. If we all make very small changes in our behaviours and attitudes towards waste this will have a major impact. It is great to see so many people working together on this campaign and we are pleased that WRG have joined the Suffolk the Greenest County Partnership.”
WRG Head of External Affairs, Mike Snell, added: “This initiative is a great example of effective teamwork and collaboration. WRG is proud to be part of a project that continues to have a positive impact on the quality of life of the citizens of Suffolk.”
