WRG planning appeal fails for Humberfield waste recycling and transfer centre.

Waste Recycling Group (WRG) has failed in its appeal against the refusal of planning permission by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council for a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) and Waste Transfer Station (WTS) at Humberfield, near Hessle.

The result of the appeal hearing – heard at All Saints’ Parish Hall, North Ferriby in April – was announced this week.  The planning inspector, Mr Jonathan King, ruled that the decision by East Riding of Yorkshire Council in 2004 to refuse planning permission should be upheld.

Paul Tomes, WRG’s Contract Director for Hull and East Riding, commented: “We are very disappointed with this result.  Waste in the East Riding and the City of Hull keeps growing and must be dealt with sustainably, and facilities such as the one proposed for Humberfield are urgently needed if the two councils are to meet their challenging recycling targets.

“The facility proposed was to have been part of an integrated network of waste management facilities for Hull and the East Riding, and this decision is a setback.  We will now have to carefully review the options open to us.  These clearly include seeking another site in the region or the re-development of an existing facility,” added Mr Tomes.

Activities at the proposed Humberfield MRF would have included waste recovery and recycling of materials from kerbside collection systems, waste reception, bulking and transfer station operations and a household waste recycling centre for public recycling.
