Expanding EastcroftWRG is currently appealing a planning application for the extension of the Eastcroft Energy-from-Waste facility.WRG originally submitted a planning application for a third line in 2005, which would have increased capacity at Eastcroft by a further 100,000 tonnes a year. This proposal was explicitly supported by Nottingham and Nottinghamshire’s Waste Local Plan. This application went to committee in September 2006 and was refused by Nottingham City Council on the basis of a single reason: that the expansion of the plant may hinder regeneration within the surrounding area. However, the need for such a scheme was recognised. WRG wanted to respond positively to the Council’s concerns and decided to submit a new application which addressed the Council’s reason for refusing the previous application. The proposal contained within the new application remained unchanged in terms of the capacity of the extended plant, the technology employed and the management of potential transport, environmental and health impacts. However, WRG decided that considerably more could be done to improve Eastcroft’s present image and visual appearance. Working together with one of the UK’s leading architectural practices, WRG prepared new design proposals central to which was a far stronger architectural vision for Eastcroft. Below are some prospective images of how the Eastcroft facility could look if the planning application is approved. The new planning application was submitted to Nottingham City Council in August 2007. As the planning application was not determined within the sixteen week period given to local authorities to consider major planning applications, WRG decided to submit an appeal. Therefore, the Eastcroft application will be determined by an independent inspector at a planning inquiry. For more information about the appeal please go to the 'Consultations' page. Permit Application The Environment Agency has issued a new permit to operate the Eastcroft facility, covering both the existing operation and proposed extension. For more details see the 'News' page.
